Interested in knowing a little more about Troop 6? Below is some information. Don't forget to check out our history page to learn about how we got to where we are.
Troop Six is one of the largest Troops in Narragansett Council — the Boy Scout Council that covers all of Rhode Island and parts of Connecticut and Massachusetts. We belong to Netop District, which covers Scouting units in Providence, Cranston, Johnston, and Scituate, among others. Typically, the Troop has between 60 and 80 registered Scouts, 15–20 registered leaders, and over 50 registered committee members.
Each year we typically advance 5–10 Scouts to Eagle and bring in a new group of 10–20 Scouts. These Scouts usually come from Cub Scout Packs in the Cranston area. However, we have a number of Scouts that come from outside Cranston. Usually this is because they initially belonged to the Troop when they lived in Cranston and wanted to remain part of it after moving to another community. Such is the dedication of our Scouts, Scouters (leaders), and parents.
Besides meeting three or four times a month in Troop meetings, Troop Six regularly participates in monthly activities. Five or six months a year will find us camping somewhere in the southern New England area. Some months we do other activities. Late in the Scouting year, usually June, we take a Troop trip where the Scouts typically combine learning with fun. Recent trips have included Washington, DC and Gettysburg, PA. We regularly participate in summer camp during August where the Scouts come away with a handful of merit badges. Older boys usually go on a high adventure related trip sometime in July. Scouting with Troop Six is a year-round activity! Check out our calendar to see what happens each month.
One of our strongest attributes is our program. This program includes a formal program to advance new boys through to First Class, provides three Eagle Scout required merit badge classes twice a year, and junior leader training for all newly-elected junior leaders (Scouts). You can find out more about our advancement program elsewhere on this site. Our program also includes substantial adult involvement. All parents of Scouts are expected to participate in the Troop Committee and to volunteer their services in some way. We firmly believe that our Scouts success is usually in direct relation to the amount of time their parents invest in the Troop. If you are not sure on how you can help, then ask. It will be appreciated!
