The national average for Scouts entering the program and acheiving Eagle Scout — the highest rank conferred in the Boy Scouts of America — is about 3%. Troop 6 Cranston consitently promotes two to ten Scouts each calendar year to that rank. Our annual new enrollment is between ten and twenty new Scouts. That translates to 10-30% Scouts making Eagle Scout in our Troop — easily triple the national level and arguably ten times it. How do we do it? Our program. We truly believe that a successful Troop is one led by boys under the guidance of adults.
There is no magic at play here, nor any cheating. We work to inspire retention. Our program is designed to take new Scouts and make them feel welcome and to see what they can potentially acheive by showing them boy leaders just a few years older doing just that. As they grow and mature, we gradually increase the challenges laid before them to keep them interested. And we provide a supportive network of adult leaders ready to assist when needed.
This program is successful because we require parents to participate. We believe that this is not some arduous task, but something that they will treasure. It allows them to see their sons develop from boys into young men they can be proud of. Men that have learned the value of character, citizenship, and fitness — and had fun doing it.
And along the way they will advance. Many who stay until they are sixteen or seventeen will earn Scoutings highest rank: Eagle Scout.
